ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam celebrated ICAR Foundation Day and the Death Anniversary of
U Tirot Sing Syiem under the theme “Youth and Skill Development” with a day-long programme at M.S. Swaminathan Hall, commencing with a plantation drive
led by the Director and staff of the Institute.
Delivering the keynote lecture on “Youth and Skill Development”, Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director, ICAR RC NEH,
Umiam, emphasized the pivotal role of youth in the development of the North Eastern Region and underscored the importance of equipping them with relevant
skills to meet emerging opportunities. He highlighted that agriculture and allied sectors, including farming, animal husbandry, horticulture, production,
processing, and value chain development, offer immense potential for sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurship. Dr. Kadirvel further stated that entrepreneurship
development presents promising career opportunities for unemployed youth across diverse fields, enabling them to become self-reliant while contributing meaningfully
to the nation's economy. He assured that ICAR remains committed to imparting need-based training and technical support to the youth and emphasized that achieving meaningful
outcomes requires active participation and collaboration from all stakeholders.

Shri P. Suliang, Education Secretary, Jaintia Students' Union, lauded the initiative of ICAR RC NEH in promoting skill development and creating employment opportunities for the youth of Meghalaya. He noted that such technical support would pave the way for numerous entrepreneurial ventures in the state. On the occasion of the Death Anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, he urged the younger generation to make the best use of the opportunities available and strive towards becoming self-reliant.
Addressing the gathering, Shri B. Thangkhiew, President, Ri Bhoi Youth Federation, described the observance of the Death Anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem by the Institute as a commendable gesture. He expressed his gratitude to ICAR for its commitment to youth and skill development initiatives that would greatly benefit the younger generation. He emphasized that the sacrifices made by U Tirot Sing Syiem for his people continue to inspire society to stand up for noble causes and work towards collective progress. He further urged ICAR to explore entrepreneurship opportunities in allied sectors such as fisheries and piggery to widen livelihood avenues for rural youth.
Shri R. Kharjana, President, Khasi Students' Union, highlighted the life and sacrifices of U Tirot Sing Syiem in his address. He remarked that observing the Death Anniversary under the theme “Youth and Skill Development” conveys the dual message of safeguarding one's identity while building a sustainable future. He emphasized that U Tirot Sing Syiem sacrificed his life so that future generations could live with dignity and freedom. Calling upon the youth to become agents of change, he urged them to fight ignorance through education, unemployment through skill development, and dependency through self-reliance.
The programme reflected the Institute's continued commitment towards empowering the youth of the North Eastern Region through skill development, entrepreneurship promotion, and capacity-building initiatives while paying tribute to the enduring legacy of U Tirot Sing Syiem.
